Artist Statement

For some years, I photographed weddings and portraits for family and friends; however, my interest and passion for the medium of photography began to change. After months of contemplation, I registered for the spring semester at the Pennsylvania State University.

By attending the Pennsylvania State University, I was able to remain within a close distance to my family. My father was struggling with lung cancer, and the close proximity enabled me to alleviate some of the pressures. Also, it opened up a door of communication and understanding for all of us. The following semester, my work consisted of a color portfolio based on things he left behind. My photography was helping me sort through emotions and document details that would be erased over time.

After completing my father's portfolio, I was driven to continue to look further inside myself. Living in a small town, my partner and I have willingly concealed our lifestyle for many years and created a safe environment within our home. With few exceptions, it was the only place we could openly care for each other. Despite overcoming many obstacles, comments and reactions became difficult to ignore. As a result, I began to photograph the intimacy between us and the inner strength we have gained through our struggles. Eventually, other couples invited me into their homes to capture intimate moments of their lives. What began as a positive means to stand against negative remarks turned into a celebration of hope, determination, and strength.

Although we have recently left that small town, photographing couples in their home or studio setting remains the focus of my work. Through this lifelong journey, I hope to have the opportunity to meet new people, tell their stories, and make a difference.
